How faux leather wears in the second year
What a PU panel does over two years of use, where it goes first, and the three things that shorten its life faster than daily carrying does.
A faux leather bag looks its best in the shop and about as good a year later. What happens after that is predictable, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after, because the places it goes are the places you can protect.
Every bag in this catalog is PU faux leather. That is a polyurethane coating bonded to a fabric backing and embossed with a pattern. It is not hide, we do not call it leather anywhere on this site, and the federal guides on leather products ask exactly that of anyone selling a material that looks like leather and is not.
The corners go first
Set a bag down on a hard floor a thousand times and the four bottom corners take every one of those landings. On a coated panel the coating thins there before it splits, and the first sign is a change of sheen rather than a hole: a lighter gray line along the base on a dark bag, a gray smudge at the corner on a pale one.
Nothing polishes that out. A hide would take conditioner and darken back; a coating has nothing to absorb it. Which is the honest reason to buy a dark panel if the bag is going to work five days a week: the wear happens at the same rate, and you see it two seasons later.
The second place is the strap fold
Where a strap doubles over its metal fitting, the panel is bent to a tight radius and held there. A coating cracks at a crease before it wears through on a flat surface, so that fold is the one place a bag can fail while the rest of it still looks new.
You can do something about this one. A strap left folded in a drawer between uses keeps the crease; a bag stored with the strap laid straight does not. It costs nothing and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
What helps, and what people do instead
What helps is dull: a damp cloth and a dry pass afterwards, and something inside the bag when it is stored so the panel does not fold against itself. A rolled towel works. The pouch from the same set works better, because it was already in the box.

Dye transfer is the one that surprises people
New dark denim gives up dye, and a pale bag carried against jeans picks up a gray-blue tint along the side that touches. It is not damage to the bag and it is not a fault: it is the jeans.
Caught in the first week it comes off with a damp cloth. Left for a season it stays, because the dye has worked into the grain of the emboss. If you own one pale bag and one pair of raw denim jeans, they are not a pair.
What outlasts the panel
The hardware. Zips, clasps, stud feet and strap fittings are metal and they keep working long after a corner has gone gray, which is worth knowing when you are deciding whether a two-year-old bag is finished or just tired. A bag with a sound zip and a worn corner is a bag for the school run, not a bag for the bin.
And the smaller pieces last longer than the big one for a simple reason: they are not the thing being set down on floors. The wallet from a two-year-old set usually looks newer than the tote it came with.
